The Tiffany Vault
CHAPTER 11: One Tough Tour
Expecting a repeat of the previous year's success, Tiffany's promoters booked worldwide concert dates for her from April to September 1989.
The tour started in the US, then flew over to Asia to perform in Manila, Malaysia, Bankok, Hong Kong, Taipei, and Korea. While there she was introduced to a just-breaking-out singer/songwriter named Tommy Page who then joined Tiffany and New Kids on the Block as they toured the US.
Tiffany left China the day before rioting broke out at Tienamen square. She boarded the plane June 12 and barely made it home for her graduation on June 15.
Tiff was still really big in Japan. In June she launched a promotion for her own line of musical instruments and home electronics with Yamaha called "The Tiffany Line." Wow!
Soon after touring Asia Tiffany recorded the voice of Judy Jetson for Jetsons: the movie, originally scheduled for release Christmas 1989.
Back in the USA for the final leg of her 1989 world tour.
The title track from "Hold an Old Friend's Hand," hit #35 on the Adult/Contemporary chart. A fourth single from the album, "It's The Lover (Not The Love)" did not chart.
Even on her own tour, Tiffany was a tough sell. The material on the 2nd album wasn't really helping. The industry had changed to favor street savvy, and anti-bubblegum. Tiff's 2nd album was very mushy and cutesy. (Thank you Tobin).
As Tiffany's popularity waned, New Kids on the Block (the opening act on her tour) had become the most popular musical group of all time. Tiff stepped down from top billing to 2nd opener (after Tommy Page).
Rumors of a romance with New Kid Jon Knight hit the press, and his fans didn't react well. Teen magazines were flooded with Tiffany hate mail.
She got herself some backup dancers, choreographed moves, and tightened up her song set, but still ... poor Tiff had to get onstage trying to sell herself to crowds of little girls who wished her dead for dating their fantasy soulmate. Danger!
If that weren't enough, Tiffany had to take a restraining order on a fan who obtained her contact information illegally from the DMV, she found out from the press that her biological father was broke and living in a storage room, and her manager was involved with some court battle for allegedly trying to sell some Tiffany music to another record label...
