The Tiffany Vault
CHAPTER 22: Take a Vote
In 2005, Tiff continued to make appearances at clubs, festivals, and autograph conventions.
Musically, Tiffany had re-teamed with the folks at Backroom Entertainment who had played a major role in "The Color of Silence" in 2000. This time around, however, Tiff had decided to take the musical direction so many people were admonishing her to take: dance. Apparently Tiffany's experiences with newfound love and nights in the British discoteques provided major inspiration. Lots of snippets of the new songs were being released by Backroom for use in soundtracks of movies and TV programs.
In March, a song Tiffany recorded with dance group "Second Sun" was released. Tiffany attended the Ultra Music Festival in Florida to promote the song and put out feelers in the dance music industry.
In April, Tiff participated in a British reality TV show called "Hit Me Baby One More Time." The concept: former stars competing for a chance at a comeback. After performing their "classic hit" and covering a current hit song, the nation gets to vote for their favorite. In episode one, Tiffany competed against stars like Gloria Gaynor and Howard Jones, and won a landslide victory of over 50%. For the grand finals Tiffany was 2nd place favored to win after Shakin' Stevens, who is referred to as the British Elvis. Shakin' did take the grand prize in the UK.
Later that summer, "Hit Me Baby" was imported to the USA as a last minute add-on series. Even without much publicity, the show killed in the ratings, drawing over 9 million viewers, many of whom favored Tiff to win. Unfortunately the US show's winner was not selected by the home viewing audience as the UK version had been. The powers that be named another group the winner of Hit Me Baby USA.
Since offers for work seemed to be coming more from the USA at this time, and also because Tiffany's son decided he did not want to move to England, Tiffany and Benn moved to California.
In June, Tiffany released her sixth full-length album, "Dust Off and Dance." Tiffany says the album is for her fans, who had been asking for a dance album for years. The album was produced, released, and promoted by the people at Backroom.
In September, Tiffany's old manager George Tobin popped up online out of nowhere to release "Dreams Never Die 2005": the album that had never been released in the USA before now included 6 bonus tracks. The bonus tracks were mostly rough demos according to Tobin, cut in his early days with Tiffany before they found the right sound for her. He asserted his motives were to satisfy a number of requests from fans as well as to show the world what a remarkable vocal talent Tiffany had at such a young age.
It took a while to get the engines revved up and running, but dance radio did latch onto "Be With U Tonite" from the dance album in 2005. The song was #1 in requests at WMPH in Delaware and #2 requests at KNHC in Seattle for many weeks running. The track reached #17 on music monitor's national dance chart.
