The Tiffany Vault
CHAPTER 18: Crowd Surfing
When Tiffany told her label that she wanted to perform at college campuses, they warned her that kids that age can be cruel. But Tiffany told them not to fear rejection.
November 8, 2000 she took to an outdoor stage at UCSD for a free noontime show. It took a bit for the crowd to warm up, but once they did the response was massive. A mini-tour of Californian universities followed, and then in Spring 2001 Tiffany and her band boarded a bus and broke concert attendance records at Colleges and Universities across the U.S.
Tiffany and her entourage blazed a trail across California, Idaho, Utah, New Mexico, Texas, Mississippi, Florida, Georgia, Illinois and Pennsylvania. Tiffany did a lot of local press along the way: newspapers, TV, and radio shows, and began to refer to "Open My Eyes," as her current single.
Tiff's business relationship with Modern Records fizzled, apparently due to continued problems the company was undergoing.
The initial pressings of "The Color of Silence" sold out very early into the college tour, and because no more were to be printed on the Eureka/Modern label, the album was still hard to find.
American fans were left hopeful that Tiffany's album would be re-released and that Tiffany would have another promotional blitz in 2002.
In the meantime, the Asia/Australian releases of "The Color of Silence" happened with the Jive/Zomba label in July 2001. Tiff put together new album packaging, new "bonus" tracks, and a great video for "Open My Eyes." Tiffany spent a week in Taiwan: taping TV and radio interviews galore. She received quite a warm welcome in Taiwan!
Next, Tiffany spent a few days in Japan: once her strongest foothold... now apparently not taking much notice of her return.
Tiff had planned to tour Australia next (for the first time ever!) but for some reason those plans were cancelled.
By late October, "Open My Eyes" rose to No. 3 in Hong Kong and Singapore. The next single was the ballad, "If Only."
For a few of months, things got really quiet in the Tiffany camp. Her manager, Ron, told fans that big things would in the works but he couldn't tell us what it was. Just that it would be BIG.
