The Tiffany Vault
CHAPTER 17: Silence Buzzes
Modern Records signed a multi-album deal with Tiffany in January 2000.
Schmidt, Tiffany, and her photographer Ron Davis joined forces as "Rand Management" to make the vision a reality.
For the next eight months, Tiffany continued writing, co-producing, and recording several more tracks -- and generating quite an underground buzz. In August Tiffany got a band together and started rehearsing for live appearances.
Public response to Tiffany's 2000 comeback was unlike anything from the 90's. In August, Billboard magazine printed their glowing review of the album as a cover story. She was featured in People and US Weekly magazines, Yahoo! hosted a live chat, and a VH1 Behind the Music episode all previous to the release of any music. That's how good of a buzz she was generating. Tiffany's comeback dreams were coming true... at first anyway.
September 2000, Tiffany was doing everything she could to keep the buzz going for for the upcoming album and its first single, which was changed at the last minute to be "I'm Not Sleeping" (Released 9/12/00). This included tons of radio interviews, an appearance at Farm Aid 2000, and MTV's Video Music Awards.
Unfortunately throughout all this promotion, Modern/Eureka Records had some serious issues with distribution. The timing of Tiffany's publicity campaign was spoiled by the fact that nobody could find the single or the album on retail shelves when it was supposed to be there.
Many radio outlets admitted Tiffany's single had a good sound, some played it a time or two, but most let it sit on their shelves.
