The Tiffany Vault
CHAPTER 2: Mall Riots
Tiffany recorded over 40 songs for the first album, mostly while she was just 14 years old. The self-titled debut was released in the summer of 1987.
The first single, "Danny" was starting to gather dust until a music exec at MCA came up with a brilliant idea.
June 23, 1987 Tiffany joined forces with Clairol's "Beautiful You: Celebrating the Good Life" shopping mall tour at the Bergen Mall in Paramus New Jersey. Each weekend Tiff flew out to a different mall in the US (14 total) and sang three 20-minute sets of her songs including "Danny," "I Think We're Alone Now," "Should've Been Me," "Promises Made," "I Saw Him Standing There," and "Johnny's Got the Inside Moves."
Shortly into the mall tour, the record company changed the first official single from "Danny" to "I Think We're Alone Now."
At some malls Tiffany got some weird looks from perturbed shoppers, but DJs started spinning her tunes and soon the malls were flooded with rabid fans. In Salt Lake City a crowd of 5,000 rioted and overturned cars!
